Crooked River is located near Elk City in central Idaho. These claims were worked by the large Yuba style dredge shown here. The Yuba Dredges could go through large amounts of ground per day but their recovery rates were estimated to be between 20% - 60%. Today's metal detectors will find these nuggets and modern equipment can reach recovery rates as high as 90%. The Idaho Geological survey records show that 50,000 ounces of gold and 10,000 ounces of silver were recovered off the Crooked River. There is an estimated 500,000 oz of gold still in the area. Nugget Shooters - This is a great place to use your modern metal detector. Today's detectors work well on tailings piles while the older models did not. Considering that 40% - 80% of the gold remains on these claims due to the inefficieny of the dredge, it makes sense to take advantage of this technology. Besides, it only takes a week or so to get appoval from the Forest Service to use a detector, and during this time then you can also file an operating plan if you decide to do so.
